I would like to start this post off stating that this is purely open conversation and in now way associated with me or my work. That being said, I think it is time to address art buyers. Art is very static, and once you buy a piece of art for your wall, let’s face it has the potential of being there for the rest of your life. When was the last time you bought anything that you will have forever?
Art in the traditional sense is indeed something that suits your interior design. With approximately 2 painting in each room, a house will theoretically have about 13-16 pieces of wall-hanging art. This is of course a generalization, but since we’re generalizing it is probably true that a new home owner will buy those 13-16 piece within 2 years after buying the house. That means that the 2 year window is prime time for all artists to try to get on those walls. OK, I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I do know that I don’t like it.
Art, like everything in people’s lives should allow itself to change and to adapt itself to your life. The biggest problem is that the art doesn’t function directly to your life. However, we do things all the time to treat ourselves… why not buy art? Why don’t people have closets full of art ready to change up their walls when they desire something new to look at. The truth is that art itself becomes static in most peoples lives. Everyone wants to have art in their home but it is a semi-obligation rather than a socialistic passion. Wouldn’t it be beautiful if people spent as much time viewing amazing art as they do reading about their favorite celebrities baby-mama? Or spending the same amount of money on art as they do on movies? Sure, the economy is in the shitter, but I hope that when we see a bounce back, that people will find art with their new found prosperity.
Art is a beautiful investment. It increases in value. It beautifies your home and life. How is it that art somehow falls through the cracks in everyones lives. Perhaps because culturally we really don’t care anymore? Maybe we need someone as strange as Warhol to come back and remind everybody that art is worth their time.
By the way, not every post will be complaining and artistic angst, but sometimes you gotta vent.
